Weekend SEO Tip #1 – High Return on Investment Search Engine Optimization

Simple steps to improve your rankings that you can perform this weekend.

  1. Look at your server logs and/or analytics and identify the keywords which brought you traffic this last month.
  2. Filter those keywords to find those that brought traffic to internal pages, rather than the homepage.
  3. Of those keywords, check Google to find those for which you rank  #11 and #12.
  4. On the homepage of your site, add a list of “Popular Tags” links at the bottom of the page that link to the pages that meet the criteria above – be sure to link using the keywords for which these pages rank.
  5. Optimize each of these pages for those keywords by adding the keyword to the title, meta-description, alt-tags, etc. and consider expanding the content on each of these pages by an additional 200 words.

The difference between #11 and #12 and #9 and #10 in competitiveness is normally insubstantial for long-tail keywords on sub-pages. However, the click-through rate jumps 4.5x (so, if you were seeing 10 visitors a month from a #11 or #12 listings, you could see 45 visitors a month by moving up just a few positions). By increasing the flow of PageRank and on-site optimization for these keywords, you can get a high Return on Investment.

    It’s an interesting suggestion, but implementing it is a good deal more challenging than I expected.

    In my case, GA gives me around 100,000 keywords that I got traffic from last month, so I got that list and went down to the terms that delivered 10 queries last month. Problem is the tail is so long there’s about 400 terms that sent ten visitors… at first glance these queries are still coming up as #1 or #2 on Google — so I guess could go back to those delivering just 5 visitors, but there’ll be over 1,000 of those… then to go check in Google to see what is on page 2? Ahh seems like a lot of work!

    Not to say your suggestion isn’t a good one, but the implementation side is challenging…

    Write yourself a tool that takes a GA exported CSV, scans google for all those keywords and then shows you the ones you’re at the top of page #2.
